Meghalaya, the abode of clouds

The name means exactly that. It is green all year, wet for much of it, and packed with places you will not find anywhere else in India. These are the stops we build most trips around.

  • Shillong

The hill capital. Umiam Lake, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, cafe streets and an easy base for the first night.

  • Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave and long valley views over the plains of Bangladesh on clear days.

  • Dawki & Shnongpdeng

The Umngot river is so clear that boats look like they float in air. Boat rides, riverside stays and cliff-jump spots.

  • Mawlynnong

A tidy Khasi village often called one of the cleanest in Asia, with bamboo sky-views and a slow, friendly pace.

  • Nongriat

Home of the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, reached by a long stone-step trek through the forest.

  • Mawphlang

A sacred forest guarded by Khasi tradition. Old trees, moss, mist and a quiet that stays with you.

  • Laitlum Canyons

Wide green ridges and deep canyons near Shillong. A favourite for sunrise walks and photographs.

  • Mawsynram

One of the wettest places on Earth. Visit for the clouds, the caves and the sound of rain on tin roofs.

When to go to Meghalaya

There is no bad month, only different moods. Here is how the year usually looks.

Autumn & winter

October to February

Clear skies, cool days and cold nights. The best window for views, treks and the river at Dawki. Waterfalls carry less water towards the end of winter.

Spring

March to May

Warmer and green, with pre-monsoon showers building. Good for sightseeing and photography, and waterfalls begin to fill again.

Monsoon

June to September

Waterfalls at full power and hills in deep green, but heavy rain can mean road delays and closed treks. We plan these trips with extra buffer time.
